BLUE DOLPHIN SEA ON THE COPPER COAST

Mostly the only dolphins I see close up are dead dolphins but occasionally I get a little closer. These shots were taken off the Waterford Coast last year in early October from the traditional sailing vessel The Brian Boru out of Waterford. The boat is operated by singer songwriter Tony McLoughlin and Greenpeace veteran, environmentalist, and now Senator, Grace O’Sullivan. This particular trip was a survey for the IWDG. The dolphins, Common Dolphins, appeared numerous times over the course of the day, tearing excited trails in the sea to get to us. There was at least one young one who was a delight to watch as he revelled in the big blue. When I see dolphins on a crisp, clear, eternal day like that one was I always think of a quote from one of my favourite authors, Dorothy Dunnett and I feel for a moment…

…as if every day were a feast day and the world was a playground again, made of blue dolphin sea and green islands…

We we also saw a fin whale but that’s for another post…
